Archeologists unearth a stretch of border road built by Romans

HOUTEN – Could the recently unearthed stretch of the Roman border road between Utrecht and Geldermalsen still be older than the proverbial one to Kralingen (zo oud als de weg naar Kralingen)? Dutch archeologists discovered stretches of such a route parallel to the railway where they also found other Roman-era artifacts. They already knew that the border between Roman-held territory and that of unoccupied Batavian tribal land was guarded by fortifications which had been connected by a road. They now have unearthed evidence of the road in various locations along the route, now nominated for the designation of a World Heritage site.
