Artificial coastal reefs a solution of Dutch engineering firm

SCHEVENINGEN – Europe’s prime Delta region has an ambivalent relationship with the sea, its greatest threat to security as well as a rich source of opportunities for many. Much of the wealth in the Netherlands is trade related and originates from beyond the horizon. Even the drive to keep feet dry has given Dutch (hydraulic) engineering companies a well deserved reputation around the world. One such engineering firm thinks that Scheveningen, a well-known coastal town, could reduce its flood risks by building artificial reefs to break the rolling waves, which now regularly erode the shoreline. The problem could become acute after 2050. Royal Haskoning has already built such reefs in the Arabian Gulf. Such reefs could encourage and enhance coastal sea life as well.
