TERNEUZEN – The court at Middelburg has ruled that the municipal authorities had shut down Coffeeshop Checkpoint legitimately in July 2008. The shop, which supplied drugs not coffee, was caught with drug quantities weighing 200 kilograms on site, nine times the allowable ceiling. Considered to the largest of its kind in Europe, the municipality was correct in pulling Checkpoint’s license. In its heydays, Checkpoint served 3,000 customers a day. Owner Meddie Willemsen served jail time and was fined $13.3 million. His employees also were fined.
