Scenic bike route connects ‘downtowns’ The Hague and Rotterdam

Vaarten Route packed with historical sights

THE HAGUE - The scenic Vaartenroute has added a bicycling option besides walking and boating. It connects The Hague’s city centre to that of Rotterdam’s city and runs along the scenic Vaarten Route.

Participants proceed past forty bridges, most movable, and some fixed culvert-type crossings while cycling the meandering route through the countryside, along the Vliet and the Schie waterways, through Delft and Rijswijk. The route includes views of windmills and water stations and offers an excellent impression of the region’s historical development.

The bicycle route covers a total of 26.8 kilometres. In The Hague the route departs from the Lange Voorhout, goes along the Binnenhof, Spui and Laakhaven and then proceeds alongside the Trekvliet to the Vliet through Rijswijk and Delft.

It then winds through the polders of Midden-Delfland, follows the Schie waterways through Oud Overschie, past the Van Nelle factory, continues on to Delfshaven and finishes in Rotterdam on the Willemskade, across from the Wereldmuseum.

Delfland

The area on the outskirts of the city is called the Hof van Delfland, a network of rural green areas and scenery between the The Hague and Rotterdam metropolitan areas, part of a larger urban conglomerate known as the Randstad.

Hof van Delfland aims to connect these cities with the countryside. The Vaarten Route is the first of three bicycle routes realized in the area.
