Het Voorne-Putten Boek
by Benschop, B., van der Houwen, A., Lassing, E.,
The area south of Rotterdam, Voorne-Putten, between the streams Haringvliet, Oude Maas and Brielse Meer, a lake, is fascinating and one with a rich culture and history. Such places deserve a book that surveys and examines that heritage which is happening in this volume. All the towns and villages on this twin-island are placed under the loupe thematically: Brielle, Hellevoetsluis and Spijkenisse, as well as the smaller centres such as Geervliet, Zuidland and Zwartewaal, from the earliest inhabitants to the formation of the Haringvliet waterbody around 1214, the agrarian roots and the religious life, the RTM-tramline and the rise of the commuter phenomenon. Many of the illustrations, obtained from the precious regional Streekarchief Voorne-Putten & Rozenburg have never been used before. This book is a rich resource for anyone who has (partial) roots in the area and interesting for everyone else wanting to read about a key area in Dutch history.
