Rond de Runde
Turf, kunstmest en electriciteit, Triptiek van de Turfindustrie
by Visscher, Wim
For centuries, Dutch homes and cottage industries for fuel relied on dried logs of peat, also known as Black Gold. Huge sections of the country - particularly Drenthe and Overijssel - had varying layers of peat which had provided (back breaking) work for generations of labourers. By the latter part of the 19th century peat was used increasingly to as fuel in nearby factories, for peatmoss processing and fertilizer production, and to generate electricity. This book reviews the peat industry (1850-1960), the opening up of vast areas in the Netherlands' Northeast and particularly the industrial complex De Runde, named after a small stream. It concludes with a overview of the entrepreneurial families involved in this economic sector, and shows how this small group was linked to and active in various peat(-related) developments.
