Het Indie Boek
by van Dijk, Janneke, Boomgaard, Peter
Few people will know this, but a public request in 1872 by a Haarlem-museum for photographs of life in the Dutch East Indies, is the basis of a 150,000 entries image bank on the former colony. This museum, now known as the Tropenmuseum, continues to collect material, which has been used to create this fascinating book. Former residents of the Dutch East Indies, who largely lost their belongings during the Japanese occupation, will be surprised to learn that a book such as this one with its 500 photographs, can fill this void. Numerous images in this book have never been published before, detailing everything from nature to government, plantations to rituals, cities, transportation, families and official portraits.
